Part-time work and Social Security Disability and SSI

Someone wrote the following question on the facebook page for SSDRC.

"Is part-time work considered substantial or gainful for Social Security Disability or SSI?"

SSA focuses on earnings levels. So, if your gross monthly income is at or above the SGA (substantial gainful activity) amount that is in effect for the given year, they won't consider you eligible to receive disability benefits. This is the case even if you otherwise meet the severity requirement for a disability listing (in the blue book) or for a medical vocational allowance--a type of approval where your current physical and/or mental functional limitations are measured against the demands of your past work as well as against their (SSA) perception--based on your age, skills, education, and, once again, your limitations--of your ability to perform some type of other work. So, regardless of whether you are working full or part-time, your gross monthly income has to be under the SGA limit. For 2012, the limit is $1010.00 per month.
