Republicans and Social Security Disability

From the AFGE:

Today, the House Leadership released its budget for the remainder of Fiscal Year (FY) 2011.

According to the House Ways and Means Social Security subcommittee, passage of this Republican budget proposal would result in a month of furloughs between now and 9/30/11.

That would mean 20-23 missed work days and pay cuts of between 7.6% and 8.8%.

Additionally, Union leaders have been advised by SSA officials that such budget cuts would also result in an agency-wide hiring freeze and backlogs in all workloads would skyrocket. Employees who leave SSA because of retirement or for other reasons will not be replaced.

SSA would virtually shutdown for a month! NO field offices, NO phones answered, NO work processed. Although it is doubtful Commissioner Astrue would do all of this at one time, the effect is the same.

Last week, over 125 AFGE SSA activists were on Capitol Hill to advise lawmakers of the devastating impact of these rumored and drastic budget cuts. Activists were appalled because many House Leaders ignored their message and the effect that such cuts would have on public service and the processing of critical workloads. Instead, many House Leaders responded with statements like “everyone will get a haircut” or “everyone must feel the pain.”

“As if waiting for years for disability is not painful enough! “said Witold Skwierczynski, President of the National Council of Field Operations Locals. “Our employees do not deserve this. We need to work together to defeat this attack on SSA, federal employees and government programs.”

If you want more information about what you can do to help, please contact your local AFGE Representative or Local Union official.

---- Apparently, congressional republicans don't really give two cents about Americans with disabilities who are in dreadful financial circumstances due to conditions which make it impossible for them to earn a substantial and gainful wage income. But, should anyone be surprised by this?
