Do Not Send In Social Security Disability Paperwork Without Doing a Follow Up Call
If you wish to appeal your disability denial, you can do so by calling your local Social Security office or the toll free Social Security number. Social Security will send you all the proper disability appeal paperwork for you to complete and return. Generally, Social Security sends a self-addressed postage paid envelope for your disability paperwork’s safe return. Even with all of this, there are times that Social Security does not receive disability paperwork that an individual has sent (that's actually putting it mildly--the extent to which this phenomenon repeats in "certain" field offices is unsettling).
So what can you do to insure that your disability appeal paperwork arrives securely at Social Security? Once you mail your Social Security disability paperwork, you should wait a few days to make sure that your paperwork arrived..and then call to verify that it has been received. Performing this one simple act can potentially save you a lot of trouble, particularly since SSA field offices do not always send acknowledgment notices after appeals have been sent in (i.e. you can't always make a sure assumption based on whether or not you've gotten an acknowledgment from SSA).
Bear in mind, of course, not to make your follow up call too soon. Social Security receives a lot of mail each day, so it could take several days or so for your paperwork to land on the proper claims representative's desk.
If your disability appeal paperwork cannot be located when you call to check, you may wish to consider submitting it again. Why? Simply because you still have to have your disability appeal paperwork sent in to your local Social Security office not later than sixty-five days from the date of the denial letter. Of course, this is why it's practical and sound to make a copy of everything you submit to social security--in the event you have to do this.
Even if you are not returning disability appeal paperwork, but some other disability paperwork that has been requested either by a Social Security claims representative or a disability examiner, make sure to call and verify that your disability paperwork has arrived safely.
Remember, your disability claim can be denied for failure to cooperate if you do not return requested information. And appeal deadlines are not worth missing.
