Metformin Chewing Gum for Diabetes
Metformin is a very popular drug for type 2 diabetes; it is the most prescribed drug for the disease. Unfortunately, many with type 2 diabetes do not take the drug due to its bitter taste, large pill size, and gastrointestinal side effects (quite frankly, however, I have not had this experience with metformin, i.e. I swallow a pill versus allowing it to linger in my mouth, which is what I think most patients do). Metformin reduces liver glucose levels and improves cell sensitivity to insulin. Ultimately, it reduces glucose in the blood and allows the body to effectively use the insulin that it produces.
The following article is an in-depth look at a new product created by Generex – the producer of the generic drug Metformin. The product is a new chewing gum that would allow the delivery of the same benefits as Metformin, but in an easy-to-take gum form. Researchers are hoping this would allow more people (children included) to take the drug.
The article talks about the recent study that compared the gum (MetControl) to the pill (Metformin). The article outlines the details of the study, including how many diabetes subjects were used, what evaluations were performed, side effects, and the final outcome.
