Food Stamps at an All-Time High

The largest anti-hunger program in the United States is the food stamp program. Up until now, the all-time high record number of people using the program was in November 2005 when hurricanes Katrina, Wilma and Rita visited. During that time there were 29.85 million people using the program, and many were doing so on an emergency basis only. Now that number has been surpassed; in September 2008 the number of people using the program jumped up 17 percent from last year to 31.5 million.

The following article discusses the economic downturn, the food stamp program, and gives some surprising statistics. For instance, it was estimated that nearly one in every ten Americans were using the program in September 2008 and that 11 percent of households in the United States struggle to have enough food to eat. The article also discusses the issue of struggling food banks and the proposed increase in food stamp benefits as part of an economic stimulus package for 2009.
