New Migraine Relief Stops it Before it Starts

Not many applications for disability based on migraines are ever approved. Which is amazing considering how absolutely incapacitating migraines can be. Amazing, but, nonethless not surprising. Despite the fact that migraines can completely rule out the ability to sustain employment, claims based on this impairment seem to be denied as frequently as all other claims, including those based on impairments such as bipolar disorder and meniere's disease (just to use a couple of examples).

Migraines can be intolerable. If you are a migraine sufferer, you are quite aware of the throbbing pain and sensory sensitivities that accompany a migraine headache. You’re probably also aware of the ‘migraine aura’, a very tell-tale sign that your migraine is about to come on. This pre-migraine phenomenon most often includes flashing lights, spots, blurry vision and dancing wavy lines, among other visual oddities. About one-third of migraine sufferers experience a migraine aura before the actual migraine.

While the ‘pre-migraine-aura’ can be annoying and even scary for those who have never experienced it before, it is extremely helpful for a new non-drug treatment of migraines called transcranial magnetic stimulation.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) uses the onset of migraine auras to stop the migraine before it and the pain starts. Basically, it is a device that sends short bursts of magnetic energy to the head during the migraine aura stage, stopping the headache before it begins. A recent study found it 32 percent effective after only one use.

TMS in this regard is meant for self-treatment. Patients can aim the device at the trouble spot during the aura and stop their migraine from coming on, without having to visit a doctor.

TMS is not only used for migraines, but is also used for depression, stroke, Parkinson’s Disease, Epilepsy, chronic pain and a host of other ailments.
