Can Antiviral Drugs Help Fibromyalgia?

Various studies have found that viral illnesses such as parvovirus, Epstein-Barr, Lyme disease, herpes virus 6 and other viral illnesses could possibly be a trigger for disorders such as chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia. It is suspected that these viral illnesses cause biological stress that mimics physical trauma, a known activator of the chronic pain and fatigue disorders.

A Florida otolarngologist, Daniel C. Dantini, has taken this idea a step further by suggesting not only that these viral illness cause fibromyalgia, but that antiviral medication can also treat it. In his new book, The New Fibromyalgia Remedy: Stop Your Pain Now with an Anti-Viral Drug Regimen, he documents his studies and says that his patients have seen dramatic improvements using antiviral medications such as famciclovir (Famvir) and valacyclovir (Valtrex). Dr. Dantini also recommends alternative treatments in addition to antiviral drugs, such as acupuncture, yoga and massage.

His studies also found that patients were likely to develop inhalant and food allergies when treating fibromyalgia with antiviral medications. Dr. Dantini suggests treating these side affects with diet modifications or if needed, allergy shots.

Mr. Dantini’s book talks about these treatments and reports that nearly 75 percent of his patients were successfully treated using antiviral medications, along with food allergy treatment. His studies showed that some patients saw a great improvement within two to four weeks, while others needed to take the treatments for six weeks to six months.
