No Street Cred

The Pope has refused to meet with U.S. Secretary of State, Condoleeza Rice, who, according to the article linked below, needed to boost her credibility, prior to visiting the middle east. As the article states, Benedict's refusal to do so illustrates the diverging viewpoints between the current U.S. administration and the Vatican. What's interesting to me, of course, is not the fact that the Secretary of State would seek to boost her credibility in this way, but the fact that the perceptions of the relationship between the most-senior American diplomat and the Pope have any sway among muslim nations. I don't doubt that it does. In the past, the expressions of the Pope have carried significance in the middle east. It's just very interesting that this would be the case at all.
