Social Security Benefits, including disability benefits, will now be expedited for Military Personnel

The commissioner of the Social Security Administration, Michael Astrue, has announced that disability claims for active duty personnel will be expedited, regardless of whether or not the disabling condition was incurred as a result of service performed stateside, during foreign deployment, or in a foreign theater of war.

Apparently, these claims will be expedited from the very start of the process, at the time at which a disability application interview is to be scheduled.

This is certainly a great move. One would hope, however, that this is not simply a politically motivated PR move and that there will be teeth behind it. One would also hope that the hundreds of thousands of American citizens who are waiting for disability hearings, while their finances go to pot, would receive some consideration as well.
